jeez, Rick, I was trying to understand Newton’s laws for school, but I keep mixing them up. Like, one of them’s about… stuff staying still? Or maybe… moving forever? Ugh, my brain hurts.
Your brain hurts because it’s allergic to learning. Look, the first law is simple, if something’s sitting still, it stays still, if it’s moving, it keeps moving.. unless something gets in its way.
So… like when I trip over my shoelaces?
Exactly. Your body wants to keep moving forward, but then your shoelace says “Nope!” and boom, you faceplant. Newton would’ve called it inertia. I call it you being clumsy.
Okay uh, second law then?
That one’s all about how force works: the harder you push, and the heavier the thing is, the more it’ll move. Or in your case, the heavier you are, the harder it is to get you off the couch.
Hey! I’m not that heavy.
Your mass is so stubborn it has its own gravitational pull.
Ugh. Okay, third law. That’s the action and reaction one, right?
Yep. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Rockets fly forward because they blast stuff backward. And when you try to high-five me, I slap your hand back twice as hard.
So basically Newton’s laws explain every way I’ve ever embarrassed myself.
Pretty much. He was predicting your life centuries before you were born
